Background, Education & Professional Activities
Dr. Donald E. Machen is the managing director of our international consultancy which has been helping healthcare practitioners since 1985. Dr. Machen, practiced as a board-certified orthodontist, a trial lawyer representing healthcare practitioners, a frequent lecturer on all aspects of risk management, including practice, business, investment and financial risk, and a trial court judge for over 19 years. He is regarded as a founding member and driving force behind risk management in orthodontic practice, organizing the first risk management teleconference broadcast to over 2,600 practitioners more than 20 years ago. He was the first editor of the Legal Aspects of Orthodontic Practice column in the American Journal of Orthodontics.
Dr. Machen is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine (DMD, MSD), Duquesne University School of Law (JD), The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business (MBA) and the University of Health Sciences (MD). In addition, he is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the CFA Institute.
Dr. Machen was an Adjunct Professor of Law and Medicine at Duquesne University School of Law for over twenty years, as well as an Associate Professor at Case Western University Dental School and an Adjunct Professor of Orthodontics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.
As a result of this unique combination of education, skill, experience and expertise, Dr. Machen has developed a client base which now spans every aspect of healthcare practice.
Recent events have re-emphasized the need for exercising great care in both your professional and personal affairs.
